Halcyon Hospice & Palliative Care volunteers are a vital part of our care team and a valued resource to our organization.

It is a privilege to welcome volunteers to the special world of hospice care. Our wonderful volunteers helps us provide the finest possible care and services to our patients and their families. Volunteer opportunities and how to sign up are described below.

Companion Visits

Visit with patients on a regular basis to provide socialization and support. Sit and visit with the patient, read to the patient or help with an activity.

A weekly time commitment is preferred. Visit time can vary, but visits usually last about an hour.

Respite Visits

Provide a break for caregivers by staying with their family member for a few hours in their home. Sit and visit with the patient, read to the patient or provide quiet support.

Time commitment usually is 2-3 hours, as requested by the family.

We Honor Veterans

Halcyon Hospice & Palliative Care is a partner organization of the national We Honor Veterans Program.  We actively recruit Veterans to volunteer for Halcyon to provide companionship & support. Our mission is to honor each Veteran who is in our Hospice Care.

A weekly time commitment is preferred. Visit time can vary, but visits usually last about an hour.

11th Hour Companion

Sit with patients who are actively dying to provide emotional comfort and quiet presence. This may be in the patient’s home or at a care facility.

Time commitment is on short notice and can be 2-3 hours.

Complementary Therapy

Help calm and sooth patients through the use of aromatherapy, massage, reiki or other relaxation therapies. Certification may be required.

A weekly time commitment is preferred. Visit time can vary, but visits usually last about an hour.

Administrative Assistant

Assist with filing, copying, data entry, organizing bulk mailings, answering phones, relaying messages or other administrative tasks as needed in one of Halcyon’s three office locations.

A weekly time commitment is preferred for 3-4 hours.

My Story Recorder

Visit with patients who would like to record their life experiences and memories. This may be a series of conversations with the patient and will be documented and given to the family as a memory of their loved one.

Visit times can vary, but visits usually last about an hour.

Pet Socialization Visits

Enhance the quality of life of our patients by visiting with your certified pet. Pet therapy promotes the human/companion animal bond and provides support and socialization.

A weekly time commitment is preferred. Visit time can vary, but visits usually last about an hour.
Animals must be certified through an accredited pet visitation program.

Bereavement Support

Make phone calls to provide information to families regarding Halcyon’s bereavement services.

A weekly time commitment is preferred, generally for 2-3 hours.

Volunteer Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Commitment of 6 months to 1 year with volunteer frequency of at least 2-3 times a month
  • Dedication to our mission and values, patient, and family confidentiality and safety
  • Submit a new volunteer application
  • Meet with the Volunteer Coordinator for an initial interview
  • Attend a 1-day new volunteer orientation
  • Attend any additional training required for specific positions
  • Pass a background check
  • Complete a 2-part TB test
  • Pass a drug screening test
  • Flu shot required during flu season
  • Provide a current driver’s license and proof of auto insurance
  • Participate in 20 hours of annual continuing education

If you have experienced a loss of a family member or close friend within the last year, we ask you to wait a year to be involved directly with patients. In the interim, we encourage you to choose a non-clinical volunteer role.
